Global warming is a phenomenon characterized by an increase in the Earth’s average temperature due to greenhouse gas emissions. The impact of this phenomenon is very broad and significant, especially on the ecosystem. Temperature changes and extreme weather affect many aspects of life on Earth. One of the most striking impacts is habitat change. Global warming disrupts the natural habitat of animals and plants. For example, species that live in cold areas, such as polar bears, must find new, colder places to survive. As the ice in the Arctic melts, their natural habitat is drastically reduced. Likewise, species that live in mountains experience a decrease in habitat area due to a shift in vegetation lines towards higher altitudes. Furthermore, climate change impacts animal migration patterns. Many species of birds and fish have shifted to cooler places in search of food. This disrupts the food chain and can result in a decline in the populations of other species that depend on it. Another impact that is no less important is biodiversity. Global warming accelerates the extinction of species by changing ecosystems that have existed for thousands of years. Studies show that changes in temperature and weather could cause the extinction of nearly a million species worldwide. Decreased biodiversity makes ecosystems less stable, more susceptible to disease, and lose vital functions that support human and animal life. Ecosystem changes also affect the water cycle. Rising temperatures lead to higher evaporation, changing rainfall patterns. Some areas will experience more severe drought, while others may face flooding. This impacts soil quality, fertility and food security. Crops that depend on certain weather conditions may not survive, resulting in a wider global food crisis. In addition, global warming increases the incidence of forest fires. Hotter temperatures and drought cause vegetation to dry out, increasing the risk of fire. Forest fires not only destroy habitats but also produce additional carbon dioxide emissions, which exacerbate the greenhouse effect. In addition, this burning has a negative impact on air quality, causing health problems for humans and animals. Marine ecosystems have also proven to be very vulnerable. Global warming causes warming of the oceans, which impacts marine life. Coral reefs, which are home to many fish species, are bleaching, affecting the entire marine food chain. More acidic oceans due to the absorption of carbon dioxide have also resulted in the loss of species such as mollusks and shellfish, which are vital to marine ecosystems. These changes require an immediate response from around the world. Any action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability will help minimize the impact of global warming on ecosystems.
